  • The Heater Masons Education and Development Program (HMED) is an excellent tool to learn more about masonry heaters. The curriculum is designed as an introductory level 1 course. It teaches the basic functions, designs, sizing, codes and advantages of masonry heaters.

This is a one of a kind course and offered nowhere else in North America.

The curriculum is 32 hours long, 16 in the classroom and 16 hours of constructing a “core” of a masonry heater. It provides the participant a must have foundation and knowledge of basic masonry heater design and fundamentals necessary before taking on the task of building masonry heaters.

    Classes are currently scheduled for:

    • April 13-19, 2015  during annual meeting at Wildacres Retreat, Little Switzerland, N.C
    • June 4-7, 2015  at Everett, Washington
    • August 20-23, 2015  at Plainfield, MA
    • October 10-13, 2015  at Perth, Ontario  – photo story on 2013 Perth class

Cost:   $600 for April 14-20, $800 for remaining dates.  The course at the Annual Meeting is cheaper because you also have to pay to attend the annual meeting ($425 which includes lodging, meals, seminars, pizza party, workshops) and also membership ($75 for 6 months as an affiliate member).  You will have supply lodging for the other courses.  Lunch and refreshments are provided.

This course is an excellent first step in learning to build masonry heaters.  The course is not intended to or should imply that the student will be able to construct masonry heaters for customers.

Class sizes are limited and registration is on a first come first server basis.  Registration deadline is 30 days prior to the class.  MHA may cancel a call if needed and all registration funds will be refunded.

If the student wants to become a professional heater builder, the HMED class can be used as one of the requirements needed for certification.
